Smartish Advice: Should I Upgrade to iOS 11?

While those who picked up the new iPhone 8 will automatically be running Apple’s newest operating system (lucky them), those with older iPhones are facing an age-old question – to upgrade, or not to upgrade?

The Cons

While getting the latest and greatest features seems like a no-brainer, there is a major downside: it’s a big download. According to Forbes, it will cost you up to 2 GB depending on your device. Time to decide which apps you really love (goodbye, Pokemon Go).

The Pros

However, the new OS does have some surprises for the tech enthusiast and luddite alike. What are our favorites? Glad you asked...

Siri can now do spoken translation in English, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish, making it easier than ever to bother strangers on the street while abroad. You can now also type to Siri, instead of having to speak commands. This is great for people with disabilities, or really anyone who feels like a jerk shouting “HEY SIRI” into their phone at Starbucks.

Drag and drop is now a “systemwide” feature, letting you drag words around as you type, as well as drag images and files between apps. You can even use multi-touch to drag multiple selections at once (it feels very Minority Report). While the feature might work better on iPad (especially if you’ve got fat fingers), it goes a long way toward making the iPhone feel like a more powerful machine.

The Verdict

Ultimately, whether or not to upgrade depends on a lot of factors, but if you like what you hear, you might as well upgrade sooner than later (your iPhone will keep annoying you to do it anyway). While the new features may not knock your socks off, iOS 11 makes iPhone feel just a little better all around. And really, what more can you ask for?
